This was a very exciting week with the State of Union Address. I thought President O'Bama's speech was good, but not full of a lot of substance. Its quite humorous that he still wants everyone to get along and work together (Its a bit like me telling my kids not to fight. Sure they will stop for about two hours, but after that things deteriorate down and bickering ensues.)
The budget freeze the President proposed worries me. Yes, I do think we need to get our spending under control but, I'm afraid the programs that are going to get frozen are the ones that can least afford it. Of course, my worry is only on the surface. It could just as easily become the next Health Care Bill or Guantanamo closing. M

So for this week's cartoon, I decided to focus on the phenomenom of James Cameron's "Avatar". I am actually surprized by some of the responses to his film. Usually Science Fiction/Fantasy films don't generate such controversy. And the Vatican's movie review actually made news!
I think I'm just cynical about people's responses to this movie. It seems overly natural for large amounts of press space (television, newspapers, magazines, internet) to be given to this film. Is it because its from James Cameron and anything he does is going to generate that kind of buzz? Is the movie really that good? Or is it the generated world that deserves the applause? As always, time will have to pass before we can lay judgment on how good a movie it is. And I have to admit I am jealous of James Cameron. After all, he did create a piece that every artist would love to have in their portfolio. One that's talked about, dissected, criticized and debated about its merits and oh, yea, brings in a ton of money. I suppose I could have done a cartoon about our newest terrorist threat (exploding underwear on affluent young loonies) but in all honesty, I don't think its funny. And our intelligence's failure to "connect-the-dots", is not particularly funny either.
So I went with the President's daydream. After a year of having to deal with Congress, and Committee after Committee, it might be the only way he will be able to accomplish any of his campaign promises. **As a side note, I have learned a very valuable lesson in parenting: Don't leave your good markers out during Christmas break. You'll come back to find that all you have are empty containers or full markers with smashed in tips. |
